“We Rise” is the third piece in Mikayla Mary’s art as activism series exploring the lived reality of sexualised violence through art. At its heart is a phoenix - soaring upward from a burning city, wings outstretched in fierce defiance. The devastation below speaks to the ruin survivors often face: shattered safety, broken trust and the painful aftermath of trauma. And yet, the phoenix rises.
This artwork is a testament to transformation. It honours the deep pain of survival while fiercely celebrating the courage it takes to rebuild. Through fire and ashes, “We Rise” reclaims the narrative—centering resilience, rebirth and the unstoppable strength of survivors.
